Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 10

Today I got asked to help out at winter sport. Winter sport is where the year 5/6's go every Friday to play there chosen sport eg. hockey, netball, football and rugby. I was asked to coach the "A" Hockey Team, another girl was asked to referee the game. We left to go to Nunweek Park at 12:15ish and while on the bus the other girl and I discussed who we would put on first half and second. 

Once we got off the bus we went to the turf that we were playing and got ready. We made sure the kids had there mouth guards and shin pads then got them to start practicing. It was freezing outside so I kept reminding them to keep their jackets/jerseys on and stay warm. We then all ate some lunch and had a team huddle. The first people on got on the turf and got into there positions. 

Then we started, it was awesome watching them play everyone was really into it and was having lots of fun. I switched everyone around so everyone had a fair chance at playing the positions they wanted to play. In the end we won 4-1. We got to choose a player of the day so we chose a girl that worked hard even though she was really tired. 

After that my mum picked me up from Nunweek Park.

The care value I showed was Community because I helped out the team even though I didn't have to. 

I showed leadership by taking charge of the team and making sure everyone was alright. 

Excellence Evidence: Technology 5

Yesterday we had technology at Lincoln Primary School. I'm in the Textiles group, which means Sewing. We are currently working on our product. The Textiles group and the Design group work together. We could choose if we wanted our project to be 3D printed or sewn. I chose to make a sewn project and then later I will choose to do a 3D printed one. 

I'm creating a bag, it will be made out of denim fabric with black zips and a flap. I will decorate it with some stuff that is related to my culture eg. hobbies, favourites, friends, family. First I made a prototype, which is basically a mini version of my final one so that I know how I'm going to make it. My prototype was made  out of green fabric.

First I planned what I wanted to have on it. I've decided to have my initials, then surrounding my initials on the whole bag I will have little pictures of things that relate to my culture (examples of culture above.) Then I started making it, first I cut out a paper pattern, then I cut out two pieces of denim (the same size) and sewed them together.

After that we had to pack up to get back on the bus to go back to school. 

The care value I showed was respect because I respect everyone around me by not using there stuff eg. shears, machine, even if it was only going to be a minute. 

I showed leadership by staying focused on my task and listening respectfully to my teachers and peers. 

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 9

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka. When I arrived I went to my line and got ready to start. First we went through all of the songs to warm us up. We then went onto the stage and practiced our school song.

After that we went to our positions in Halleujah which weren't on the stage they were in the middle of the hall. After we did Halleujah we waited for the command to move to the next song, which is the Māori word 'neke.' We then all moved to our next positions, which were the ones for Tuhurihuri. Mr Broen didn't want any of the year eight girls doing poi, (I don't know why.) so we all just shadowed. The actions for Tuhurihuri are the year eight girls do long poi while all of the other girls used the short poi or the small rakau sticks. The senior boys used these long sticks (I'm not sure what they are called) and the other boys did the actions. Everyone was doing the correct actions and no one was doing it wrong. 

Then we transitioned to the next song which was the school song and went through that a few times. After that we left for morning tea. 

The care value I showed was respect because I listened respectfully to the teachers and my peers.

I showed leadership by listening respectfully to Matua, Mr Brown and Mrs Baker. 

Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 9

On Wednesday I had a Student Council meeting. Head Girl is the Chairperson so she runs the meeting. We talked about which charity's we could raise money for and wrote them down. We then chose one and thought about topic related things that could raise money for that charity. The charity we chose was the SPCA, we thought about having a mufti day with a gold coin donation or pet food donation. We also thought about if we wanted to dress up in blue and white clothes, (the colours of the SPCA) or if we wanted to have a pet talent show. We also talked about the pet requirements eg. Child friendly. After that we chose a few helpers to help us on the day once we organised it. Then we told the kids to go back and ask there class this question: Ask your class who would be able to bring their pets and if they would enter them in a Talent/Fashion Show. In Student Council I take the minutes so below I have put the details of the meeting.

Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 7

The other day the school held a plunket mufti day. This was to raise money for the plunket organisation in Canterbury. It was a gold coin donation. Being one of the four heads I was able to participate in the event by going around with the other heads and the plunket mascot to show the kids. We first went to the office meet the woman who was dressing up as the plunket bear called Blue, her name was Karen. When we got there we got a bucket, to put all of the money in and a small version of Blue the bear to carry around with us. (I got to hold it.) 

It was a team decision to go to the junior rooms first. It was really cool to see all of the little kids be amazedby a giant blue bear in their classroom. A few of the classes got a photo with the bear and all of them came up and gave Blue a high-five or hug. After going to all of the junior rooms we went to the year 7/8 area and it was funny to see there faces when Blue walked in they looked really confused and kinda like why did you bring that bear in here.

After the year 7/8's we went to the year 5/6's and then the year fours. Throughout all of the classes we collected the money that they raised. 

Once we were finished we went back to the office and helped Karen count the money. It was a huge job because we needed to have the exact right amount and not miss any. In total the school of 650 raised $701.70, and all of that money went to plunket to help them look and children up to five.

The learner quality I showed was resilient because when we were counting the money it was tough trying to make sure you didn't miss one coin. 

I showed leadership by helping Karen go around the school because the suit was a big heavy one and sometimes she couldn't see where she was going so I helped her.

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka, I arrived a bit late because I had something else on but I didn't miss anything. When I walked in everyone was in the positions we would be in on the night eg. boys on the stage and girls in front of them. I quickly went to my position which was two people to my left from the middle. First we did the school song with the old actions so the boys didn't walk through the middle and the girls didn't step aside.

Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 8

On Wednesday I had a student council meeting. I turned up on time and had everything that I needed, like a computer because I take the minutes. (Taking the minutes means that I write down what we talk about in the meeting.)

Then the leader of the meeting, Head Girl, got the whiteboard and started to write out what we're going to talk about today. After that we started the Student Council meeting because Mrs Trotter was not there yet. We took the roll and then started to talk about some things for the future of Oakland's.

After that Mrs Trotter arrived and we carried on with the meeting. We talked about some main things that we think we need for the rebuild of the school. One thing we talked about was having water fountains on the field, so that when we are thirsty we didn't have to go all the way to one on the courts. Another thing that came up was that we wanted more open classes like the ones in the year 7&8 area. This would be a good idea because then the rest of the school could learn like us seniors. 

The care value that I showed was respect because I showed respect by helping others if they didn't know what we needed to do.
I showed leadership by just getting on with the meeting and also being a good role model by not being silly and listening to the speaker.

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 8

On Friday I had Kapa Haka, I am in the performance group. I used to be in the apprentice group, the apprentice group is where you just learn the songs; not the actions and don't perform. Me Brown and Mrs Baker weren't there so it was just Matua leading Kapa Haka, about ten minutes into it Mrs Baker arrived to help. First we practiced Hallelujah, but when we walked forward, some of the boys weren't doing it properly so we kept doing that over and over and over until they got but right. 

After that the year eight girls practiced long poi while all of the other girls used the short poi or the rakau sticks. The year eight boys used these long sticks (I'm not sure what they are called) and the other boys did the actions. It was really hard at first, but then I kept trying and got the hang of it. I was able to show a few people how to do it. It was really fun because we were all teaching each other how to do different things. I can pretty much do the main two that we have to learn and can partly do the one that we may put into the actions. 

The leaner quality I showed was communicate because I listened to Matua when he was teaching/showing us the actions. 

I showed leadership by teaching my friends how to do long poi.

Yesterday we had a leadership meeting, it was held at morning tea. The meeting was about being organised. We watched a video made by some people from the GRIP Leadership team, they are a group that helps student leaders. The video explains three key things to do to help you be organised, in case you don't want to watch the video those three key things are:

1. Write it down

2. Everything in its place

3. Preparation is key

We watched this video to help us when we are busy and have many things to juggle. We then discussed why we needed use these skills and when. We use these tips to help us control our busy schedule, some of us also use an app/website called Trello which is and online task manager. Trello is a very useful app/website.

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 6

Today at ten thirty I went to Kapa Haka. First we lined up and did the school song and He Honere. Then they let the apprentice group go back to class. 

After that we did the first song that we do in the performance, which is Hallelujah. We lined up then did the song, Mr Brown said it was perfect, I was very proud. Then we did the next song, that was Tuhurihuri. Tuhurihuri is the song where the senior girls do long poi, the senior boys do something with these long sticks, (I'm not sure what they are called) the other girls do short poi and the other boys do some actions. The senior girls long poi routine, in my opinion, is going really well, most of us know the actions and we all know when we have to change. 

Then we practiced the school song a few times so they knew everyone knew the actions.

After that Kapa Haka finished and everyone left to go out to morning tea, but I stayed and practiced. I taught a few other girls how to do the different techniques in long poi, I also taught them the times that we have to change in the song and told them if they were stuck they could watch the people at the front. 

The leaner quality I showed was communicate because I communicated with my friends to teach them long poi.

I showed leadership by stepping up and teaching my friends when no one else would. 

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 5

Today I had Kapa Haka, first we all lined up and went through a few songs. Like the school song. 

Then Mr Brown said that we were going to focus on the transitions between the different songs. The first song we do is Hallelujah, then we do Tuhurihuri and then we did the school song. We practiced each transition lots of times during those songs. 

Then all of the different groups went away and practices there part e.g poi, rakau. I'm doing the long poi so all of the other girls doing long poi and I went outside and practiced. We decided that we would change at every part. We had already decided what actions we would change to. I volunteered to help the people who hadn't learnt the actions yet.  

We then came inside and went through the whole song with no stops or interruptions by the teachers. Now the only thing we need to practice is getting on and off the stage.

The leaner quality I showed was communicate because I communicated with the girls to come up with the actions.

The other day the other three heads and I decided to organize a Talent Show for the Kauri Team. We first went and talked to Mr McCallum, he said that we had to include other people but we could organize it. 

After that we set up a meeting with him and discussed who would be doing what. We asked two people to be 'Security' so people couldn't come in without paying. We also got a few people to MC (microphone) the semifinals and do the songs and technology based stuff. 

Then I put forward the idea of doing a google form, so we decided on that and started to create a google form that people could use to audition for the talent show. 

Then Mr Ladbrook told us that he could help us and it was time to pack up.

The learner quality I showed was contribute because I contributed some ideas to the group.

Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 4

The other day the other three heads, Miss Brennan and I decided to judge the poster competition that us four heads ran for a few weeks in term one and term two. 

We judged two different competitions, Kākano and Kauri. There were way more entry's for Kauri than Kākano so it was harder to judge Kauri. For both competitions we chose a first and second place for each, first place gets two blocks of chocolate and second gets one. For Kauri we chose a runner up because we felt that the person deserved to be awarded for the work he put into his poster, we gave him a small bar of chocolate. 

Then we announced it at the whole school assembly, we shook there hands and gave them the chocolate and they got to stand up in front o the whole school. 

The learner quality I showed was communicate because I communicated with the group to come up with the winners. 

I showed leadership by standing up in front of the whole school to present the winners.

The teacher didn't have nylon or zips yet so I couldn't start so instead I planned what I wanted to have on it. I've decided to have my initials, then surrounding my initials on the whole bag I will have little pictures of things that relate to my culture (examples of culture above.)

After that we had to pack up to get back on the bus to go back to school. 

The learner quality I showed was resilience by not giving up when the teacher didn't have the right fabric for me. 

I showed leadership by going onto a different task when my fabric wasn't ready. Instead of sitting there and doing nothing. 

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 3

Today I had Kapa Haka, I am in the performance group. First we practiced the school song. Then we practiced Hallelujah, but we didn't do the actions or the girls come in, then the boys part. So everyone was very confused and when the part came where we had to start singing, no-one sang. Then once Matua explained we understood. 

After that the year eight girls practiced long poi while all of the other girls used the short poi or the rakau sticks and the boys learned the Haka. It was really hard at first, but then I kept trying and got the hang of it. I was able to show a few people how to do it. It was really fun because we were all teaching each other how to achieve different techniques. I'm still learning but with enough practice I hope I'll be able do it. I've learned how to do the side to side one, it's really hard because you have to swing the poi side to side at different times.

Then stood in the positions we would be in during the performance and everyone did what they needed to do while the year eight girls kept practicing. After that we had to come up with a routine, we still haven't come up with one but we are getting there. We stayed in the hall till the end of morning tea. 

The leaner quality I showed was resilience because even when the long poi was really hard, I kept going and now I kinda can do it. 

I showed leadership by helping others learn long poi. 

Excellence Evidence: Cross Country 3

On Thursday the Kauri team had there yearly cross country at Halswell Domain. When the bell rang we did the Whanau Hui as usual. Then we had about half an hour to do some SML. (Self Managed Learning) After that we packed up, got our stuff and lined up. The seniors were last in the line so we arrived last. When we were crossing Halswell Road there was a police officer to help us cross safely.

 When we got down to the domain we had something quick to eat and then we walked the track so we knew where to run. We didn't walk all of it because it was very long. The year 7/8 races were first because the touch team had a tournament and they had to leave at 12pm. We had to do 2 laps of the course. The year eight girls went after all of the year sevens left. After my race I was exhausted. I came eighth. We got to sit down and relax for a bit and then we went over to play a game chosen by the house captains. The game was capture the flag. I am very proud of myself for coming eighth.

The leaner quality I showed was resilience because when I was exhausted in my race I carried on and didn't give up. 

I showed leadership by listening to the teachers and doing what they asked. 

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 4

Today I had Kapa Haka, I am in the performance group. We started practicing the school song. We had to do it over and over until everyone was doing the actions right. 

After that we practiced Hallelujah, there are not many actions in Hallelujah. At the start only four people are singing, then about midway through the song all of the girls come in. Then at the last part the boys come in. Then we sing the song again. While we are singing the first part we all walk forward up to the four people who sang at the start, so we are all singing and standing together. 

After that Mr Brown said that the year eight girls could practice long poi while all of the other girls used the short poi or the rakau sticks. It was really hard at first, but then I kept trying and got the hang of it. I was able to show a few people how to do it. It was really fun because we were all teaching each other how to achieve different techniques. I'm still learning but with enough practice I hope I'll be able do it. I can kinda do the side to side one but after a while the poi will hit me in the face. 

We stayed in till the end of morning tea.

Excellence Evidence: Kapa Haka 2

Today I had Kapa Haka. First we had to take off our shoes. (like every time we have Kapa Haka) Then we got in our lines ready to start practising. First we did the school song a few times so we could remember the actions and words after the holidays.

After that we got in our lines for Hallelujah and practised that. First four people start singing, then the girls come in, and then the boys. At the start of the second time singing it we slowly walk forward. (in time) We had to go through that heaps of times because a few people were walking out of time or singing the wrong words. They chose a few people to sing the background bit, but they weren't really in time, hopefully they'll learn.

Once we finished everyone left, except the year eight girls, so we could practise long poi. I'm slowly getting the hang of it. My friends and I tryed to help each other learn how to use it. There are two different things that we have to learn, one of them is kind of like swinging them side to side. The other one is over your head. 

Once the bell rang we put the poi away and went back to class.

The leaner quality I showed was resilience because even though I still don't know how to use the poi properly I didn't give up and kept trying. 

I showed leadership by trying to help my friends learn poi. 

Excellence Evidence: Being a Role Model for the Kākano Students 2

The other day my friend was on Librarian and she needed some help. We went to the Library to get some books, we got three beanbags and two boxes of books. My friends job was to read to the Kākano students. 

We set up the beanbags on the Music Room deck, and put the boxes down. Straight away at least five kids came over. Two girls came over two me, I asked them to choose a book. They came back with a Barbie book, one of them sat on my knee and I read the book to them. After that they swapped and the other one sat on my knee. We read a few more books then they wanted to go play. A few times I was in the middle of reading a book and the child I was reading to would just run off, but I showed resilience and put the book away and waited patiently for someone else to come.

Most of the books we read were very short, like a few pages. After that a few more children came over, for me to read to them. I also went around and offered to some children if they wanted to read a book because some of them didn't know that some of the seniors were readings to the juniors. All of the books I read were Barbie books.

The leaner quality I showed was resilience because a couple of times when the child would run away when I was reading, I put the book away and waited patiently for someone else to come.

Excellence Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 3

Today we had a leadership meeting. It wasn't a meeting at morning tea, it was in class time because the PALS and Peer Mediators had their meetings at the same time. I was away when we had the first meeting so I had to catch up. We had to create a survey for the rest of the school, about how they think we are going as leaders. 

All of the groups had to think of two questions that they would like to add. Us heads decided on:

- What've been your favorite events that have been run by leaders during your time at Oaklands.

- What events would you like leaders to run in the future. 

We all came up with the first one and I suggested the second one. After that we had to decide how we could change our question so that the juniors would understand. Then we carried on with SML.
